About Our School

Marist College Penshurst is a regional Catholic systemic high school for boys in Years 7 to 10.  We see our school as a school of excellence in these important adolescent years.

The size of the school is approximately 520 boys. This size allows for a full and comprehensive curriculum to be offered, while still providing an effective pastoral policy - a place where each student can fulfill his potential and be happy doing it.. Because we are a Year 7 to 10 school, we are very proud of the fact that our students are offered a significant number of opportunities to develop leadership, responsibility and self confidence in their important formative years.

Part of a worldwide network of Marist schools, the school was founded by the Australian Marist Brothers in 1953. Marist schools are based on the ideals of their founder, St Marcellin Champagnat, who started the order in France.  We celebrated our 50 year centenary in 2003.

The basic principles of a Marist education are...

  • Family Spirit
  • Zeal and Hard Work
  • Simplicity
  • Spiritual Formation of the Child
  • Fondness for the Child Most in Need
  • Education of the Whole Person: Faith, Culture and Life in Harmony
  • Effective Teaching
  • Being Present to the Children
  • Good Example
  • Daring, Audacious, Youthful Optimism
  • All to Jesus through Mary

In keeping with these ideals, the school aims to be a place where hard work and excellent achievement is highly valued, where the individual student is respected, and a strong family and community spirit is evident.  For a wonderful insight into what it means to be Marist, check out this article by Brother Tony Butler.

At the conclusion of Year 10, many students move to Marist College Kogarah, where their enrolment is assured. Recent rationalisation of Catholic Schools in the St. George area has ensured that boys at Marist College Penshurst will be guaranteed a position at Marist College Kogarah. Kogarah Marist offers courses that cater both for students intending to carry on to Tertiary Education as well as those who do not wish to follow a full academic course.

Both schools have a similar educational spirit, based as they are on a rich tradition of Marist Education in schools, colleges and universities around the world.
